NEW YORK — Louie Varland tried to hint to some of those above him within the Twins’ organization this offseason that his older brother, Gus, was eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 draft.“He’s available,” he mentioned. But despite the younger Varland brother’s gentle suggestion, the Twins passed on Gus Varland in December. Five picks later, the Milwaukee Brewers snapped him up, the geographic next-best situation for the family.Louie and Gus Varland both went to North St. Paul High School and it was when they were there that Louie said they first started talking about one day being major-league pitchers at the same time.“Just like high school kids just talking,” Louie said. After playing college ball at Concordia-St. Pau University, both were drafted. Older brother Gus was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 14th round of the 2018 draft, and wound up with the Dodgers via trade before being nabbed in the Rule 5 draft by Milwaukee. Younger brother Louie went to the Twins in the 15...

Lava La Rue Erupts at Coachella

Lava La Rue Erupts at Coachella: Singer, songwriter, director and generally talented artist Lava La Rue brought her genre-defying music to an enthusiastic Coachella on Friday, and the Weekly caught up with her backstage shortly afterwards…How do you feel the set went?It was great. It was our first ever time playing an American festival, ever. So yeah, and it was being livestreamed so it was a bit of pressure but only because I knew my grandma would be watching. That’s the scariest part. Not all the influencers in the crowd, but potentially my grandma livetreaming it at home. Although it’s a bit part her bedtime in UK time. So yeah, that’s what was going through my mind. Have you played UK fests?Yeah, those are fun but this is so different. I did my second year of Glastonbury last yeah and this is world’s apart considering I would say Glasto and Coachella are the American/UK equivalents. I think that the overall crowd of Glasto know that they’re not going to look good. You’ve j...

I remember all our wives were going to go down to the finish line,” Bailey said this week.Marathon Monday is typically a festive celebration in Boston. Devils hoping Palat regains Stanley Cup magic for playoffs

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 05:04:00 GMT

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — When the New Jersey Devils signed Ondrej Palat to a five-year, $30 million contract in the offseason, it was with the hope they would be right where they are now — in the NHL playoffs for the first time in five seasons.Coach Lindy Ruff will have Palat at his disposal when the series against the rival New York Rangers opens Tuesday at the Prudential Center.Sure, former No. 1 overall picks Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier, star defenseman Dougie Hamilton and emerging goaltender Vitek Vanecek are going to have major roles in the best-of-7 battle. But when it comes to the playoffs, Palat — Pally, as he is referred to by teammates — is money. The former Tampa Bay forward played 138 postseason games with the two-time champions, and 48 goals and 46 assists. Those 94 points are 119th overall in NHL playoff history. What’s more remarkable is Palat has had only one 20-plus goal season since his first full one with the Lightning in 2013-14.“I think he puts himself in pos...

The site is in Richmond, about 70 miles (115 kilometers) east of Indianapolis, near the Ohio border.“Other than that one hot spot, I consider this contained, controlled and 99% out,” Brown told The Associated Press on Saturday afternoon.Mayor Dave Snow said Friday that experts would meet Saturday to discuss ai...
