Update: September 15, 2023, 2:33 p.m. ETThis article was updated to include information about a Twitter policy to temporarily remove checkmarks from verified accounts that change their profile pictures. Twitter offered only an auto-response to The Intercept’s request for comment ahead of publication. The article was previously updated to note that Twitter restored UAW’s Twitter verification after publication. After members of the United Auto Workers walked off the job at midnight, Twitter stripped the union of its account verification without notice, according to a UAW official. The account, as of publication time, lacked verification — but its blue check was restored shortly after the story began circulating widely. Twitter’s verification policy temporarily removes verification from accounts that change profile pictures, which the UAW did in conjunction with the walkout.A UAW official told The Intercept that the union’s account, which they paid for, was verified until Friday ...Great Frederick Fair kicks off with Gin Blossoms, Sugar Ray and cornucopia of food, rides and games

The Maui Invitational will be held in Honolulu this year because of the wildfires that devastated Lahaina, where the tournament usually is played.Games will be played at the Stan Sheriff Center on Hawaii’s campus on Nov. 20-22 and the tournament will again feature a loaded field that includes potential top-10 teams Kansas, Purdue, Gonzaga, Tennessee and Marquette. Syracuse, Chaminade and UCLA round out the field. This is the third time in four years the tournament has had to be played somewhere other than Maui. Restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic forced tournament officials to move the event to Asheville, North Carolina, in 2020 and it was relocated to Las Vegas in 2021.The tournament actually began in Honolulu in 1982 when Chaminade, then an NAIA school, beat top-ranked Virginia in what is still considered one of the sport’s greatest upsets.“We are disappointed that we could not make the Lahaina Civic Center available for the Maui Invitational this year, but we...A United jet dropped 28,000 feet in eight minutes after pilots feared a loss of cabin pressure

CHICAGO (AP) — A United Airlines jet headed to Rome turned around less than an hour into the flight and descended rapidly after what the airline termed an indication of possible loss of cabin pressure. The plane returned to Newark, New Jersey, and landed safely early Thursday morning, the airline said.United said there was no loss of pressure and passengers’ oxygen masks did not drop, but the pilots could not be certain.Data from tracking service FlightAware showed that the Boeing 777 descended from 37,000 feet to less than 9,000 feet in eight minutes.Pilots are trained to respond to a loss of cabin pressure by descending to an altitude that is low enough for people on board to breathe without oxygen masks. The shortened flight had 270 passengers and 14 crew members, according to the airline.United said it found another plane, which left Newark around 3:30 a.m. and reached Rome after 5 p.m. local time, about six hours later than the originally scheduled arrival time. DENVER (AP) — Sean Payton’s blueprints for a rebuild by the Denver Broncos and a rebound by Russell Wilson this year began with a $139 million offensive line commitment in free agency to land guard Ben Powers and right tackle Mike McGlinchey. The return of left tackle Garett Bolles from a broken leg that sidelined him most of last season and the continued growth of center Lloyd Cushenberry III and guard Quinn Meinerz are also crucial for Denver to snap out of its persistent spiral. Those upgrades face a stiff test Sunday when the Broncos (0-1) host the Washington Commanders (1-0), whose stout defensive line features arguably the top tackle tandem in the NFL in Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne, along with edge rushers Montez Sweat and Chase Young.“I want us to be the most dominant group on the field — like every game,” Payne said during training camp. “We’ve got the capability to do that. … We’ve got all the pieces we need to just take over games, dominate and jus...Washington Mystics heading home between WNBA playoff games against New York

NEW YORK (AP) — The Washington Mystics can spend a few nights at home between games of their WNBA playoff series with the New York Liberty because of the expanded time between postseason games this season.Washington plays New York on Friday night in the opener of their best-of-three series. Game 2 isn’t until Tuesday night, so the Mystics will bus home after the opener and won’t return to New York until Monday. “It was a lot of nights to be here trapped in a hotel when you can get to go home and have a couple nights at home,” Mystics coach Eric Thibault said after shootaround Friday. “That was just the thought behind it. We have people that like being in their own beds. Myself included.”The Mystics are the only playoff team in the first round that could easily head home between contests. Chicago plays in Las Vegas, Minnesota at Connecticut and Atlanta at Dallas. The three road teams would have to fly back and forth.“It’s a lot of days to be here.
